There is a great line said by the actor Peter Falk to his on screen Grandson in the movie 'The Princess Bride'.
Falk says with light admonishment, "When I was your age Television was called books!".
It's a line that stuck in my mind back then and still holds true today.
In fact the movie itself is charming tale about a book set in medieval times.

So is the pen is still mightier than the sword?.
It is true but sad to say T.V, Computer gaming and Cell Phone texting absorb a lot of many peoples free time - something which books used to do.

But the ability and to enjoy reading is not to be underestimated and the expression curling up with a good book epitomises the escapism and relaxation reading can provide.

"A Bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking" - Jerry Seinfeld.

T.V Versus the Written Word

White Screen Television

This is an ongoing argument but it can be argued the written word will always trump T.V as you have to visualise what you're reading.

As a result you are actively using your mind whereas T.V provides the visualisation and therfore the viewer is taking a passive role and the mind is being fed rather than having to work a little.

We can then become little more than Zombified Couch Potatoes where we hand over the thinking process and allow the T,V to think for us and tell us in many cases what to think, drink, eat and be.
What Car to drive,What make-up to wear,What clothes to dress in and so on.

Yes,there is a difference to being informed rather than told but the lines can become very blurred between the two sometimes.
I like most of you watch T.V and I believe it is a tremendous resource but it's use in moderation is the key.

I've often argued with those that watch a lot of Soaps that I would rather be out living my life than watching other people live theirs.
At least with a good book you feel like your involved in the story rather than a passive onlooker.
